“ Microsoft Delays Recall Feature on Copilot Plus PCs to Address Security Concerns and User Control”
Microsoft has postponed the release of its anticipated "Recall" feature for Copilot Plus PCs, originally planned for Windows Insider testing in October, now rescheduled for December. The Recall feature, designed to automatically capture screenshots of user activities, aims to provide a searchable timeline that allows users to revisit past actions on their PCs. However, its launch has been repeatedly delayed as Microsoft works to ensure robust security measures and user control options.
Brandon LeBlanc, senior product manager for Windows, emphasized Microsoft’s commitment to security: “We are committed to delivering a secure and trusted experience with Recall. To ensure we deliver on these important updates, we’re taking additional time to refine the experience before previewing it with Windows Insiders.”
The delays began in June following security concerns and user privacy feedback, leading Microsoft to refine the feature, making Recall opt-in and allowing users to fully uninstall it if desired. The latest postponement is to finalize security measures, including encrypting the Recall database and requiring Windows Hello authentication for access.
Microsoft has also clarified that Recall is not mandatory on Copilot Plus PCs and will be an entirely opt-in experience. This clarification follows confusion stirred by online speculation that Recall was embedded in the latest Windows 11 update (version 24H2). While traces of the feature appeared in the update, Microsoft assures users that they retain full control over its use and visibility on their devices.
As Microsoft addresses these security and usability concerns, the Recall feature is expected to launch for Windows Insiders by December, allowing users to test its capabilities within a controlled and secure framework.
